Signs your child might need an eye test
Children may assume how they see the world is normal, so it’s important to look out for signs they may need an eye exam.
These include:
- Sitting too close to screens or books.
- Frequent eye rubbing or squinting.
- Tilting their head or covering one eye when focusing.
- Difficulty concentrating on schoolwork.
- Complaints of headaches or tired eyes.
- Poor hand-eye coordination.
Early detection of common childhood conditions like myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), amblyopia (lazy eye), or strabismus (crossed eyes) can prevent long-term vision issues.
Child-friendly eye examinations
We get it – most kids would rather be climbing trees or gaming rather than sitting in an opticians. We do our best to make their experience comfortable and – dare we say it – even enjoyable.
These 20-minute appointments are specially designed for children aged 5 and above, using child-appropriate testing methods without compromising on clinical quality.
We'll assess your child's visual acuity, eye coordination, colour vision, and overall eye health using techniques that feel more like games than tests.
NHS eligibility
We're pleased to provide NHS-funded eye examinations for all children under 16, and up to 19 if in full-time education. Additionally, those eligible qualify for an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses.
